Alexandria 👁️
Archaeologists are recovering pieces of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. While the Great Pyramid of Giza still stands today, most of the other wonders survive only in fragments, and in this case, those fragments have been sitting beneath the sea for centuries. Recent work has brought up 22 massive granite blocks from the harbor at Alexandria, some weighing close to 90 tons. These include structural elements like entrance stones and foundational pieces, giving researchers a clearer picture of how the tower was built. Instead of rebuilding it above ground, the focus is on digital reconstruction. Each block is being scanned and turned into a detailed 3D model, then combined with earlier discoveries to recreate the structure as accurately as possible, including changes made over time. Built in the 3rd century BC and standing for roughly a thousand years, the lighthouse was eventually damaged beyond repair by earthquakes. Now, its remains are helping researchers better understand one of the most advanced engineering achievements of the ancient world.
