How I Avoided Spending $2,500+ in Hotels in Rome
🏨 Rome Hotels Are Expensive...
One thing that surprised me while planning my trip to Rome was just how expensive hotels can get. It's not uncommon to see rooms priced at $500+ per night, especially if you want to stay right in the heart of the city.
If you're staying 5 nights, that's easily $2,500 or more on hotels alone. For me, that's a hard pass.
Instead, I used Hilton Honors points for my stay.
Now, not every points redemption is a good deal, and I'm generally a conservative traveler when it comes to spending points. Did I book a hotel directly next to the Colosseum? Nope.
What I did book was a Hilton property located right next to a metro station that gets me into the heart of Rome in about 20 minutes. For me, saving thousands of dollars was well worth the short train ride.
One of my favorite Hilton Honors perks is that when you book 4 nights entirely on points, you get the 5th night FREE. That means I was able to stay 5 nights while only paying points for 4 nights.
👉 My total redemption was 240,000 Hilton Honors points for 5 nights.
Since the 5th night was free, that's essentially 60,000 points per paid night. For a Hilton property in Rome during peak travel season, that's a redemption I was very comfortable making.
Could I have spent fewer points at a cheaper property? Sure.
Could I have spent significantly more points to stay directly in the city center? Also yes.
Travel hacking isn't about always finding the absolute cheapest option. It's about finding the best value for YOU.
For me, a comfortable Hilton hotel, executive lounge access, free breakfast, and a quick metro ride into Rome was the sweet spot.

Would you rather stay in the city center and pay more, or stay a little outside the city and save thousands?
