Volunteer Coaches: Building Great Practices, One Step at a Time
Volunteer coaches are the heartbeat of youth sports. Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned helper, running a smooth, fun practice can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone!
  • Start with a simple plan: Pick 2–3 key skills to focus on each practice. Less is more!
  • Use a timer or stopwatch to keep drills moving and maximize energy. Kids love variety and quick transitions.
  • Delegate! Ask parents or older players to help set up, shag balls, or run stations.
  • Keep instructions short and clear. Show, don’t just tell.
  • Always end with something fun—a game, challenge, or team cheer.
  • Most important: Remember, your presence and positivity matter more than perfect drills.
What’s your biggest challenge as a volunteer coach? What time-saving tips or practice ideas work for you? Let’s share our best advice and support each other—Pack style!
