Gukesh Dommaraju is an Indian chess grandmaster and the reigning World Chess Champion. He rose from child prodigy to the pinnacle of the sport in his teens, becoming the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history after defeating Ding Liren in the 2024 FIDE World Championship.
Born on May 29, 2006, in Chennai, India, Gukesh learned chess at age seven and progressed rapidly through India's strong youth chess system. He became a grandmaster in January 2019 at 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, making him the second-youngest grandmaster in history at the time, narrowly missing the record by 17 days.
2024 marked the defining year of Gukesh's career. He won the FIDE Candidates Tournament as its youngest-ever winner, earning the right to challenge defending champion Ding Liren. In December 2024, he secured the title by winning the final game of their championship match, becoming the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion at 18 years and six months—surpassing the long-standing record set by Garry Kasparov in 1985.
Gukesh is known for deep calculation, strategic maturity, and composure under pressure. His success reflects the remarkable depth of modern Indian chess, following the trail blazed by Viswanathan Anand while emerging alongside a new generation of elite Indian grandmasters. His world title has further strengthened India's position as one of the leading nations in international chess.
