🔹 すみません = "Excuse me" / "Sorry" / "Thank you"
1️⃣ "Excuse me" (To get someone's attention)
You can use 「すみません」when you want to get someone’s attention politely.
✅ When ordering at a restaurant
🔹 「すみません!注文をお願いします。」
sumimasen! chuumon wo onegai shimasu.
(Excuse me! I’d like to order.)
✅ When asking for directions
🔹 「すみません、この近くに駅はありますか?」
sumimasen, kono chikaku ni eki wa arimasuka?
(Excuse me, is there a station nearby?)
2️⃣ "Sorry" (To apologize)
「すみません」 is also used to apologize in various situations.
✅ When you bump into someone
🔹 「すみません、大丈夫ですか?」
sumimasen, daijoubu desuka?
(I’m sorry, are you okay?)
✅ When you are late for a meeting
🔹 「すみません、遅れました。」
sumimasen, okure mashita.
(I’m sorry for being late.)
3️⃣ "Thank you" (To show appreciation)
Surprisingly, 「すみません」 can also be used to express gratitude, especially when you feel slightly guilty or appreciative.
✅ When someone gives you a seat on the train
🔹 「すみません、ありがとうございます。」
sumimasen, arigatou gozaimasu.
(Thank you so much.)
✅ When someone picks up something you dropped
🔹 「すみません、助かりました!」
sumimasen, tasukari mashita.
