There was a point early on when I thought I had everything I needed to start my practice.
The education.
The certification.
The clinical experience.
But I was sitting there thinking…
“Now what?”
Because no one talks about this part.
The part where you realize:
It’s not just about what you know.
It's about who you’re connected to.
When you leave a job and step into private practice…
you lose more than a paycheck.
You lose:
The hallway conversations
The quick second opinions
The built-in support system
And if you’re not intentional about it,
that isolation can slow you down fast.
What I learned (and wish I understood sooner):
Building a private practice is not a solo journey.
It’s built on connection.
Not in a salesy way.
Not in a forced networking way.
But in real, human relationships.
Because your network becomes:
The people who refer patients to you
The people who answer questions you don’t know yet
The people who remind you you’re on the right path when it feels hard
And here’s the shift most people need:
Your peers are not your competition.
They are your community.
There is more than enough need for mental health care.
Collaboration will always take you further than trying to figure everything out alone.
If you’re just starting out, this might feel uncomfortable.
Reaching out.
Introducing yourself.
Putting yourself out there.
But that’s part of the transition.
You’re not just a provider anymore.
You’re building something.
If you’re in that stage right now—
trying to figure out how to actually grow your practice,
build connections,
and not feel like you’re doing it all alone…
That’s exactly where mentorship and the right community make a difference.
Thrive NP Academy is an application-only mentorship program
for PMHNPs who are ready to build and grow their private practice
with structure, support, and real guidance.
This isn’t about “networking.”
It’s about building the kind of connections
that actually support your practice—and you.
Drop “NETWORK” below if this is something you know you need to work on.
Or share where you’re at right now:
Are you just starting?
Already building?
Trying to grow but feel stuck?
Let’s talk through it.
