What a wonderful, expansive talk by Alicia Elias on why we should all do our best to come to Ethiopia.
She took us on a journey through:
The rich and ancient history•
The legacy of resistance against colonialism
The cuisine
The coffee, the culture, spirit, and depth of the people
So much to unpack.
Alicia also shared her own story — growing up in Trinidad, discovering an early love for math, and coming to see math as a sacred, universal language that connects us beyond borders, accents, and backgrounds.
That love has grown into a powerful vision: building a math center in Ibadan, Nigeria, as a space for learning, liberation, and future-building.
And then she said something that lingered in the room:
“Ethiopia is the ancient mother.”
And truly — the mother is calling us home.
Not just to a place on the map, but to memory, to excellence, to curiosity, to responsibility, and to possibility.
Grateful for voices like this that remind us who we are, where we come from, and what we’re here to build.
