Cloacal Vent Anatomy: Normal Appearance & Function
Let’s talk about the cloaca!
What IS the Cloaca?
The common chamber where the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts all meet and exit the body. The external opening is called the vent.
Why One Opening?
Birds are designed for flight—combining three systems into one reduces body weight! The cloaca efficiently handles:
🐓Feces (digestive waste)
🐓Urates (urinary waste—the white part!)
🐓Eggs (reproductive system in hens)
NORMAL Vent Appearance:
HEALTHY SIGNS:
✓ Moist, pink tissue
✓ Clean feathers around vent
✓ Puckered/closed when not actively passing waste or laying
✓ Oval-shaped opening
✓ Slight protrusion during egg laying (returns to normal after)
Size varies by:
🐔Laying hens have larger, more elastic vents than non-layers
🐔Actively laying hens show more prominent vents
🐔Pullets have smaller, tighter vents
ABNORMAL Conditions to Watch For:
PROLAPSE
❗️Tissue protruding from vent (pink/red mass)
❗️Can be oviduct, cloaca, or intestine
❗️EMERGENCY—requires immediate attention!
❗️Causes: oversized eggs, straining, calcium deficiency
VENT GLEET (Cloacitis)
⚠️Inflammation of cloaca/vent area
⚠️Dirty, matted feathers around vent
⚠️Foul odor
⚠️White/yellowish discharge
⚠️Often yeast infection
PASTY BUTT (Chicks)
🐣Droppings stuck to vent, blocking opening
🐣Can be fatal if not removed
🐣Common in shipped/stressed chicks
EXTERNAL PARASITES
🪲Lice/mites visible around vent
🪲Feather damage, scabs, irritation
TUMORS
🐓Firm masses in/around vent
🐓Most common in older hens
When to Check the Vent:
ROUTINE:
🗓️During regular health checks
🗓️When examining sick bird
🗓️Before/after introducing to flock
IMMEDIATELY if:
⚠️Egg binding suspected
⚠️Bird straining with no output
⚠️Bloody droppings
⚠️Visible prolapse
⚠️Swelling or discharge
Vent Inspection Technique:
🐔Gently part feathers around vent
🐔Look for color, swelling, discharge, parasites
🐔Check tissue appearance
🐔Note any odor
Prevention:
✓ Proper calcium for layers (prevents straining)
✓ Appropriate lighting (prevents premature laying)
✓ Don’t force pullets into early production
✓ Good parasite management

❓Do you include vent checks in your routine health exams? 🔍
