Tarot began in 15th-century Italy as aristocratic playing cards, not mystical tools. Over centuries, it evolved from gaming to divination, gaining symbolic depth through occult and psychological reinterpretation. The Rider–Waite–Smith deck (1909) made Tarot more intuitive. Today, it’s used for self-reflection, spiritual growth, and storytelling, blending history, art, and personal insight.

People used playing cards for divination long before tarot. Cards spread from China to Europe, where suits gained symbolic meaning. By the 1700s, cartomancy was common, and readers used numbers, suits, and court cards to interpret life events. Tarot began as a game, but later adopted these divinatory methods, creating the system we know today.
