You Can't Protect Them Forever
One mom in our session said something that really stuck with me.
She said, “My son’s a sweet little boy, kind, sensitive - but I know I can’t protect him forever.”
She’s teaching him how to handle things on his own, even when it makes her nervous.
And that reminded me of something from my own childhood.
Back in middle school, I had a bully on the bus.
During music class, he kept throwing stuff at me - paper, pencils, you name it.
I told the teacher, but she didn’t do anything.
Finally, I said, “If you don’t handle it, I will.”
The next time he threw something, I stood up for myself.
Of course, the teacher saw me but not him.
But after that, the bullying stopped.
That moment taught me something I didn’t have the words for back then - sometimes you have to be brave enough to advocate for yourself when nobody else will.
And now, as parents, our job isn’t to protect our kids from e very challenge,
but to prepare them for moments like that -
moments where they have to speak up, stand up, and trust the voice we helped them build.
So maybe the real question isn’t,
“How can I keep my child safe?”
but,
“How can I help them feel strong enough to keep themselves safe?”
That’s the shift.
From protection to preparation.
And that’s what raising ready kids is all about.
