I’m writing to you from our anchorage at Navadra Island in the Mamanucas. Clear blue water. Steep green islands. White sand beaches. The kind of place you look at and think, this is exactly what I imagined Fiji would be like. But beautiful doesn’t always mean comfortable. Navadra is protected from the predominant southeast winds, but there is a gap between Navadra and Vanua Levu Islands that allows swell to find its way into the anchorage. And right now…it’s rolly. What’s interesting is how much the tide can change things. At high tide, water covers the shallow area between the islands and the swell can roll through the gap. At low tide, more of the shallow seabed is exposed, creating a natural barrier and reducing some of that swell. We’ve also had several days of stronger winds, so even when the wind eases, the ocean takes a while to settle. This is something you experience in many anchorages throughout the Mamanucas and Yasawas. They may be well protected from the wind, yet still exposed to the southerly swell traveling across a long stretch of open ocean. Sometimes you can move and find a calmer spot. And sometimes the anchor is secure, the weather is safe, the view is spectacular…and you simply live with the roll. You secure everything down, adjust your expectations and make the best of it. That’s cruising too. Not every beautiful anchorage is perfectly calm. Sometimes paradise rolls. 😊

If you could ask a Captain one question before leaving the dock... There are questions people often hesitate to ask around boats because they think they should already know the answer. But confidence on the water is not built by pretending. It grows when you can ask a clear question, understand the reason behind the answer, and practice without feeling rushed or judged. So today, imagine we are still safely tied to the dock and you can ask me anything before we get underway. It could be about docking, weather, anchoring, navigation, safety, sail handling, living aboard, joining a boat as crew or simply knowing what to do when you feel uncertain. 💭 Finish this sentence: “I would feel more confident on the water if…” There is no question too basic, and you do not need to own a boat to join the conversation. 🌺
