The reason we can’t get going is often the paralysis of wanting to do it perfectly. It’s a slippery one. It looks like we don’t have the right idea, the right resources, the right pen.
The room is too hot. Too cold.
We’re tired. Foggy. We don’t feel well. We’re hungry.
A friend needs us.
The toilet desperately needs cleaning.
As a writer, I’ve heard ‘em all!
What we really are is afraid. Afraid we won’t be up to our high standards, we’ll be judged, we won’t be successful.
I call that thinking a kink in the hose. Because it’s not how the creative process works so it pinches it off. The flow requires an enjoyment of the process. A willingness to get messy. It’s really about doing, getting feedback, learning, adjusting.
Getting into motion is where the magic happens
