What they don’t teach you in art school
Saw a post recently by an artist recently and it got me thinking about my own journey as an artist. It has not been an easy road. When I came out of art school (one of the best in the world) I was still quite unprepared to make a living as a working artist. For four years in college and the majority of my life prior to that I had sharpened my ability to paint and draw, and given no thought to how exactly I would make any money doing it. As an illustrator you are essentially starting a business. In college I had a few classes about html, built a website and sent out into the world. How to get clients consistently was not on the curriculum. I had a great time met some great people, but was not prepared to support myself. Now its been a long time ago for me, but In my experience art schools need to focus alot more on the business aspects of being an artist or illustrator today! What is your experience like?
