St Patrick's Day is on Tuesday March 17th, and brings us images of all things green, three and four leaf clovers, and fables of leprechauns, rainbows, pots of gold, and a wonderful serenade by Kermit the Frog.
Let's explore some fables:
The Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow
It most traditions, Leprechauns are tricksters, and the taunting of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow is in itself, a trick.
Perhaps all of us have a thing, where we can state, "if I had this, or if I became more of that or was more this . . . I would be happy." Contained in that what if statement is a direction arrow to our disillusion, and if we are not careful, that which places us on an endless elusive chase.
This chase will consume our time (our most precious commodity), and our energy. Instead of the end of the rainbow, we may reach the end of our days, always having chased for something that we thought would make our lives "rich," but in reality stole the wealth of our time, our energy, and our peace.
The story of the Leprechaun and the pot of gold offers us to sit with the discomfort of the "if only . . ." statement. It asks us to weather the rainy days, the storms in our life, and gives us a reminder that even the difficult is accompanied by light, and the sun will shine again. It asks us to sit instead of chase, and be with the collateral beauty of it all.
It also asks us to remember that true riches are not outside of us. Most cultures have a version of the following storytelling, which suggests the real riches are hidden within the quality of our compassion, our kindness, and the way we extend and encompass love to others and to ourselves. Real riches, are within the humanity and humility of our human heart . . .
The Story of Where God Hid the Treasure
At the beginning of the world, God gathered the angels.
“I am going to create human beings,” God said,“and I must hide the greatest treasure somewhere so they will spend their lives searching for it.”
The angels began offering suggestions.
One angel said:
“Hide it on the highest mountain. Humans will never reach it.”
God replied:
“They will climb every mountain.”
Another angel said:
“Hide it in the deepest ocean.”
God smiled.
“They will build ships and dive to the bottom of the sea.”
A third angel suggested:
“Hide it on the far side of the moon or among the stars.”
God answered:
“They will learn to fly and travel through the heavens.”
The angels were puzzled.
“Then where can it be hidden so humans will not easily find it?”
God paused for a long moment and then said:
“I will hide it inside their own hearts.”
The angels asked why.
And God answered:
“Because that is the last place they will ever think to look.”
It's not easy being green . . .
No, I don't mean it's hard to eat your green veggies, but if you're struggling with consuming these wonderful nutrient dense liver restoring foods that can balance blood sugar, hormones, repair and rebuild tissue and muscle, send me a message and I'll share with you some delicious ideas.
Green in the chakra system is associated with the heart, and it's not always easy to live by the heart. We have loyalties that may pull on heart strings that begin with the words, "should do," instead of what we know to be true in our heart.
Fear will compete with courage, to find gut will power, to find voice, to find action to live by the heart, to risk retaliation by whatever the result we may be afraid will come true, but the right thing to do, is still the right thing to do.
Finally, there is the loneliness, that not everyone will understand our dream, our passion, and it may be, that the people closest to us, or perhaps no one we know at all, will understand; the heart asks it of us anyway.
There are heartfelt wishes to be brought into matter, because it matters to the heart. If we find ourselves off, and something is a matter, we remember that it's all of a matter of the heart, it's heart matter. We must turn to heart and ask what matters to it. Of all the friends to have in this world, may we be friends with our own heart. The pot of gold, is inside. If we can truly find the way in, then we can say, we are lucky.
The Kindredness of things . . .
I have traveled the world. I have actually circled it several times. What I find is that cultures have different and beautiful gorgeous expressions to celebrate living, but in essence, we are all the same.
We just want a good life for ourselves, our family, and our community. Hopefully we extend our heart field to see the wold as one family, including mother nature who gives so much.
As the world is spinning to war, and wrestling to remember we are kindred, rainbows remind us of bridges of connection, and so may we "someday find it, the rainbow connection,"
and thank you for what it is to be your practitioner and a kindred soul in your care,
see you in session, warmly to all
"the lovers, and dreamers, and me."
