"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." - 1 John 4:18 The part I treasure most about this verse is that beautiful promise: perfect love drives out fear. When my mother-in-law came to live with us, I found myself living in constant fear - fear of doing things wrong, making her mad, not treating her with enough respect or dignity. I struggled with the delicate balance of taking over her finances, medications, and bathing schedule while still honoring what independence she could handle. Then came the medication crisis. I couldn't get her into a doctor for two months, and I assumed she knew how to take her pills since she'd been living independently. One day I watched her "system" - she'd put one pill from each bottle on the table, move them around into three random sets, take one set, and save the other two for "lunch and dinner." My heart sank. Is she going to accidentally harm herself? How do I handle this without making her feel incompetent? Every time I tried to help, she became angry. Later I realized - it wasn't anger, it was fear. She was terrified that if we discovered she was struggling, we'd think she couldn't care for herself or the great-grandson she was raising. She feared we might take him away or put her in a home. Of course, that was the furthest thing from our hearts, but fear was clouding her understanding. So I changed my prayer. Instead of asking God to fix the situation, I prayed for weeks that she would feel His perfect love through me - that my actions would communicate love so clearly that it would drive out her fear. And you know what? Perfect love really does drive out fear. When we approach our caregiving from a place of God's perfect love rather than our own anxiety and control, everything shifts. Fear loses its grip - both on us and on our loved ones. Dear caregiver, what fears are you carrying today? Remember, you are deeply loved by the One who created you. Let His perfect love fill you so completely that there's no room for fear - and watch how that love overflows to bless those you serve. 💕
