I had a fantastic chat with Terry Edmond’s yesterday morning, he called me up to offer some advice regarding how to add a few yards to my casting. I had posted a video of my morning weight training session, stating I’d like to be able to fish at 140yards with a baited rig and regulation diameter line (not 10lb line with a 50lb leader). He quite rightly replied asking “what is regulation diameter then Paula?”.
This got me thinking…
Why do MOST (not all!) fishery rules and regulations stipulate that fishing mainline should be a minimum of 15lb when fishing for Carp? Terry and I both agreed that diameter is more important than breaking strain, so why do we mostly speak in terms of breaking strain?
As I’m typing this, I feel like I am answering my own question in my head…
Diameter is a more important consideration for casting - a thinner line will always cast further than a thicker line right?
Breaking strain is a more important consideration for fish safety - a stronger line will better ensure the line doesn’t fail and cause Carp to be trailing yards of line, potentially leading to being tethered and potentially catastrophic consequences for that carp?
But does higher diameter = higher strength? Not in all cases I don’t think? Or am I wrong? I am always happy to admit I am wrong in any given situation…
What are your thoughts?? 😬😊🎣
