Story telling... tenses... what do I use?
👉 Question:
From @ebiwrites4u “Hey Tyson, I wanted to ask.
When we write copy, what tense should we write our stories in?
I'm confused.”
👉 Answer:
Great question, G.
As a general rule of thumb, use the past tense.
Why?
Because that’s how we naturally tell stories.
For example:
✅ “I was working that crappy carpentry job…”
✅ “I remember the night I almost gave up…”
✅ “I thought I had watched someone die…”
Past tense makes it feel real. Like it already happened. Like the lesson has already been learned, and now you’re passing it on.
That builds trust.
BUT, don’t be afraid to use a sprinkle of the present tense at times to make moments more dramatic.
✅ “He trips”
✅ “Boom”
✅ “He hits the ground hard.”
But use this sparingly.
If you get stuck, write it as you would say it to someone.
Hope that helps, bro.
