Apollo 1
The bodies of the Apollo 1 astronauts were recovered from the spacecraft after the fire and taken for autopsies, which concluded they died from asphyxiation by carbon monoxide and toxic gases. The recovery was difficult because the heat had caused the nylon of their spacesuits to melt and fuse with the spacecraft's interior. Afterward, the bodies were prepared for funerals.
