20 AI Rules That Will Instantly Improve Your Results
Most people are not getting poor results from AI because the tool is bad. They are getting poor results because their instructions are too vague.
If you want better answers, better content, and better ideas from AI, these are the habits worth learning.
1. 𝑩𝒆 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒗𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒆
If your prompt is fuzzy, the answer will be too. The more specific you are, the better the result.
2. 𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆
Giving AI a role changes the quality of the response. For example: “Act like an experienced copywriter” or “Respond like a beginner-friendly business coach.”
3. 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅
AI works better when it understands the situation.Tell it what you are trying to do, who it is for, and any important details.
4. 𝑼𝒔𝒆 𝒂 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆
A strong prompt usually includes:
  • the context
  • the role
  • the task
  • the style
  • the format
That one change alone can lift the quality fast.
5. 𝑺𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆
Do not leave the voice up to chance. Say if you want it warm, direct, simple, professional, encouraging, or bold.
6. 𝑩𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌 𝒃𝒊𝒈 𝒋𝒐𝒃𝒔 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔
If the task is large, do not cram everything into one prompt. Get AI to help you one step at a time.
7. 𝑮𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒙𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔
If you have a style you like, show it. Examples help AI understand your direction much faster than long explanations.
8. 𝑨𝒅𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒔
Clear boundaries often create better output. Things like word count, format, reading level, or “no jargon” make a big difference.
9. 𝑨𝒔𝒌 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔
Do not settle for the first answer. Ask for 3 to 5 versions so you can choose the strongest one.
10. 𝑹𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆
Great prompts are rarely one-and-done. Ask AI to tighten it, simplify it, shorten it, or make it stronger.
11. 𝑰𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘-𝒖𝒑 𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔
A smart line to add is: “If anything is unclear, ask me questions before answering.”
That alone can improve the result dramatically.
12. 𝑨𝒔𝒌 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑-𝒃𝒚-𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈
For trickier tasks, tell it to work through the process step by step. This usually leads to more logical and useful answers.
13. 𝑹𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒇𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏
If your wording could mean two different things, AI may choose the wrong one.
Clear instructions save time.
14. 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆
Tell AI who the content is for. A beginner, a business owner, a retiree, a busy mum, a CEO. It changes everything.
15. 𝑺𝒂𝒚 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕
This is understated. You can say things like “no fluff,” “avoid jargon,” “do not sound salesy,” or “keep it conversational.”
16. 𝑹𝒆𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈
If the answer is close, do not throw it away. Just say what to change. For example:“Keep the structure but make it more friendly.”
17. 𝑨𝒔𝒌 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒊𝒕𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇
A great follow-up prompt is:“What is missing from this?”or“How could this be stronger?”
You will often get a much better second version.
18. 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚
You can ask AI to do more than one thing in order. For example: “First analyse this, then summarise it, then rewrite it for beginners.”
19. 𝑩𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒍𝒂𝒚𝒆𝒓𝒔
The best results often come from using one prompt to build into the next. That is how you get deeper, more polished work.
20. 𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒐𝒂𝒍
Let AI know what the final result is for. A post, an email, a sales page, a lesson, a lead magnet.
Purpose shapes the answer.

  • Start with a clear role
  • Give more context than you think you need
  • Show examples when possible
  • Be direct about tone and format
  • Save your best prompts so you can reuse them later

Most people use AI like a search engine.
That is not how you get the best from it.
The people getting great results are treating AI more like a helper they need to brief properly.
They guide it. They refine it. They adjust until it works.
Same tool. Better instructions. Better outcome.
𝐀 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐲
Use this as a starting point:
You are a [role]. I need help creating [task] for [audience]. The tone should be [tone]. Format it as [format]. Here is the context: [details].
That one formula will already put you ahead of most people.

Better prompts lead to better output. Better output leads to better results.
This is one of the most useful AI skills you can build right now, and it does not require you to be techy to learn it.
It just requires you to be a little more intentional.
