I never thought I’d be a mom.

Truthfully, the life I was living at the time Chris and I got married didn’t make room for it. I was working full-time going to law school at night then went right into a 80+ hour a week corporate trial lawyer job at a large law firm. And I loved it… for a while anyways…

I was in my early 20s, making multiple six figures, working at one of the largest law firms in the world. I was the only Black woman in litigation. My goal? Travel the world. Try cases. Serve global clients.

Then one night, I walked past an office and saw a partner at the firm crying at her desk. Her child was yelling on the phone, saying, “You promised. I can’t believe you’re not coming again.”

That was the moment I knew—I’m not doing that. I’m not bringing a kid into this life. Besides, Chris and I both agreed before marriage we wouldn’t be parents 🤷🏽‍♀️

But then, when I started my own business and had more schedule control, something inside of me changed and I really wanted to be a mom!

Fast forward to now…

Yesterday, my daughter and I had an impromptu Mommy-Daughter “Nail Day.”

After picking her up from school and taking her to swim class, we went to get our nails done!

The nail tech asked, “When are you off?”

It took me by surprise because I’ve been an entrepreneur over seven years so I haven’t been asked that in a while…

I said, “In some ways, I’m never off. In other ways, I’m always off since what I do doesn’t always feel like work.”

That’s what pitching gave me. Freedom.

Freedom to take the day off just because.

Freedom to build memories with my daughter.

Freedom to make money and impact—on my terms.

And when I say pitching, I don’t mean begging.
