Growth Identity
As one who works in the self-transformation space, one type of transformation that many go through is that of recovery from addiction. Many of us go through very different stages of addiction just like many of us go through very different stages of recovery, but one thing about going to recovery meetings (as much as they work) over some time is that I couldn't call myself an addict...because to me, it would feel like a disposition of perpetual wanting to use. And after enough life experiences from my own personal relapses, it would seem that the one way that worked for me to get over my addiction was to drop the identity of being an addict.
Your identity has such an effect on the actions that you do, the way you think about yourself, and the way that you think of the world even. Understandably so that if you do get caught up in a habit that takes away your quality of life, yes, you're caught up in an addiction. And maybe for a good portion of time, this may be a chapter in your story in which you are an addict based on this...but the identity of an addict shouldn't be one that's permanent.
In the video below, a colleague of mine puts into the perspective of the evolving of an identity...and dare I say even the repurposing of yourself through your identity. Other take aways I received from this was that...as far as I'm concerned, the only identity that you should have is one of a growth identity.
Always growing. Always evolving. As you navigate the streets of your life, keep yourself open to growing and keep yourself open to possibilities that can change and shape your growth identity! 💚💚💚
