Getting the Right Feedback Matters
Feedback is essential—but getting it from the right people is just as essential. It’s not only about finding someone with experience. It’s about finding people who understand the story you’re trying to tell. That could mean someone who understands your genre, your tone, your world—or even your culture. Quick story: One of the first scripts I wrote was about black characters. I received notes from a very successful producer, but they didn’t understand that cultural context. The feedback I got on the dialogue didn’t align with the truth of the story. If I had taken those notes as they were, the characters would have lost their authenticity. That doesn’t mean people from different backgrounds can’t give valuable feedback; they absolutely can. But at the very least, you want feedback from people who understand and respect what you’re building. The goal is not to change your voice, but to strengthen it.
