Think of Tongan as one of the "original" Polynesian languages. It’s stayed true to its roots for millennia while developing its own cool, unique quirks that set it apart from its cousins like Tahitian or Māori. Tongan is most closely related to the language of Niue. Unlike many of its neighbors, Tongan hasn't changed much due to outside influence. It has kept a very distinct character. Tonga & Niue are the only members of the "Tongic" branch (very small), meaning they split off from the rest of the Polynesian family very early on.
