"Where do you see yourself in five years."
Most students answer the ambition question.
That is not actually what is being tested.
The hiring manager wants to know one thing.
Are you going to stay long enough to be worth the investment they are about to make in you.
An answer that is all about your own growth, with no connection to the company, signals this role is a stepping stone, not a commitment.
Here is the reframe.
Tie your growth explicitly to growing with this specific company.
"In five years, I want to have grown into someone who can lead projects like the ones this team is running, and I want to have built that expertise here."
Same ambition. Completely different signal.
