South Africa has 19 National Parks, including the famous Kruger National Park, a reserve so large it’s the size of Belgium.

Add to that the countless private game reserves, farms, and lodges, and it’s no wonder our country is one of the world’s top wildlife destinations. “Come to South Africa and we will show you.”

Visiting a reserve is one of greatest pleasures for families. It’s a day of slowing down, breathing deeply, and letting nature reveal her secrets. You can drive for hours, scanning the long grass and thick bush for animals cleverly hiding from sight.

But there is one animal that rarely hides: the giraffe. With its long neck rising above the treetops, it’s almost impossible to miss. I can’t remember a single game drive where we didn’t encounter these gentle giants.

I don’t go looking for the Big Five — I look for giraffes. Their movements are so graceful and peaceful that watching them feels like attending a ballet.

I don’t need an opera house for Swan Lake; I have my own performance under the African sky.
