A recipe our friend from Alaska posted in her community brought back so many memories. It made me think about the Rice Krispies treats I used to make for my kids’ birthday parties — sticky fingers, laughter, and that sweet smell of condensed milk filling the kitchen.
So, how do you make Rice Krispies treats the South African way?
I take the classic Rice Krispies squares and add that unmistakable Mzansi twist — condensed milk, colourful sprinkles, and a whole lot of gees!
Perfect to keep the kids busy this last week of the school holidays. 😊
𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
4 cups Rice Krispies cereal
1/2 cup condensed milk
1/4 cup butter/margarine
1 bag (200g) marshmallows
1 tsp vanilla essence
1/2 cup colourful sprinkles
𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
➜ Melt the butter/margarine over low heat.
➜ Add marshmallows and stir until smooth.
➜ Stir in the condensed milk and vanilla essence for extra sweetness and flavour.
➜ Remove from heat and quickly fold in Rice Krispies until evenly coated.
➜ Press the mixture firmly with a spatula into a greased square dish.
➜ Decorate with the colourful sprinkles while still warm.
➜ Allow to set for 30 minutes, then cut into squares and enjoy.
