Rescued an old iPod boombox… and now I’m so close 👀🔧
I spotted this old iPod boombox sitting in a pile of things my parents were about to throw out. Covered in dust. Untouched for years. No idea if it even powered on. I couldn’t let it go without at least trying. Took it home… plugged it in… nothing. So I opened it up and gave it a proper clean. I carefully took it apart, checked everything over, and put it back together again and plugged it in. It powered on 🙌 and I could just about hear my trusty iPod nano… but only just. It now has super faint audio. I’ve checked connections under a microscope and everything looks solid and there are no loose joints. But I can’t get the sound any louder. I assume it’s the amplifier but I genuinely have no idea. It feels ridiculous to bin it when it’s this close to working properly. Would love some ideas before I admit defeat, although I realise this group isn’t massively active!

Repairing a household fan
My fan wasn’t working. Most people would’ve binned it but I wanted to give it one last shot. Took it apart and: - Fixed the switch mechanism (weirdly cool but complicated mechanism, couldn’t find any reassembly instructions online) - Oiled the bearings (so everything spins freely again) - Cleaned a decade’s worth of dust - Put it all back together Now it runs smooth & quiet 🥹 Sure, it was a £20 fan. But it’s no longer going to landfill. It’s now rescued, refreshed, and ready for another few summers 💪 Have you ever done a similar repair?

Repairing a household fan
Hello, future fixers
Hey future member of Solder Squad 👨‍🔧👩‍🔧🫡 This is the very first post in what I hope will grow into an amazing little corner of the internet - a place for anyone and everyone who’s ever wanted to learn how to repair small electronics, but didn’t know where to start. Or they started, and quickly gave up when they couldn’t figure it out. Or they broke something 👀 Whether you’re staring at a dead games console, a smashed phone screen, or just curious about what a soldering iron does - you are 100% in the right place. This group is for: 🔧 Amateurs and total beginners 💬 People who want to ask “stupid” questions without feeling stupid 🧠 Tinkerers and DIYers who want to share what they’ve learned or worked on without having to post it to their personal socials where no one will appreciate it 🌍 Anyone who wants to stop throwing stuff away and start fixing instead We’ll share tips, tricks, teardown tutorials, what gear to buy, what each tool does, common pitfalls, and probably the occasional disaster (learning moment!) too. And hopefully, over time, this becomes a go-to community to inspire people to pick up a tool and give it a go. 💬 If you’re reading this and just joined… Leave a comment below and tell us: • What’s your name? • What are you hoping to learn? • Have you ever fixed anything before? • What’s one gadget you wish you could repair? Let’s get to know each other 👇 Have you repaired anything before?
