It's time for...THE AWKWARD INTRODUCTION
I am notoriously bad about writing introductions and things like that. So I will try my best to make this short, and relatively entertaining. Hi! I'm Marisa and I like to sew. Well not like, love. Actually, i'm probably on the border of being obsessed. I started sewing back in 2006 when my husband took me on a date to the Maryland Renaissance Faire. Prior to that, the only sort of renaissance anything that I knew about was what I was taught in school, and seeing the movie "A Knights Tale" with my 7th grade class. Once we walked through the gates and I saw people in their garb, I immediately made my husband rent me a costume, and within one week, I started to teach myself how to sew. By the time we went back to the Renaissance Faire, which was about a month later, I had completed my first, albeit, VERY amateur, pirate ensemble. And it's been my obsession ever since. I mainly make historical garments, ranging all the way back from Ancient Rome & Africa, all the way into the Edwardian period, and then a jump to the 1920s through 1950s. I tend to make my patterns by eye, but of course I still use actual patterns (even though I have literally cried at some patterns because the instructions were so unclear to me). I have a knack for turning modern clothing into passable historical clothing, which is beneficial for new sewists, those who don't have the space or even a lot of time. So what is my goal with my Skool community? Well, I would like to teach others the basics of sewing, show tutorials for different garments, host sew-a-longs, and bring in people who love historical clothing but are afraid to start sewing. I will be glad to share more information about me and my journey, but if I do that here, it would be a novel! In the meantime, you can visit my socials (peep the icons to the right) to see my work and such! You can also join my Facebook group: Period Pieced Events & Historical Costuming, in which I share lots of historical fashions, posts, and events.
