I spent years thinking I was just a 'high achiever' because I was the first one in and the last one to leave. I'd fix every mistake before my team even saw it.
I thought I was helping. I wasn't. I was over-functioning.
Most of us do this because it's how we're wired. Maybe you had to be the 'stable one' growing up or you learned early on that if you didn't do it, it wouldn't get done right.
Your brain thinks if you stop holding everything, the whole world collapses.
But here’s what actually happens when you over-function:
• You burn out by 3 PM every Tuesday.
• Your team gets lazy because they know you’ll fix their mess anyway.
• You start low-key hating the people you’re supposed to be leading.
The hardest part of leadership isn't the work. It's the discomfort of sitting on your hands and letting someone else figure it out.
You have to decide what's actually yours to carry and what you’re just stealing from someone else’s growth.
Are you an over-functioner? What’s the one thing you’re doing right now that someone else on your team should be handling? Drop it in the comments.
