Weekly IAM Catch-Up is happening in 5 days
What Does an IAM Person Actually Do at Work?
Someone asked in one of our weekly calls what an IAM person actually does at a company day to day. I made a video answering that question. It covers why company size changes everything about your first year, what the honest day to day tasks look like. If you are trying to figure out whether IAM is the right move for you or what to expect when you get there, this one is worth 8 minutes. There might be many other facets to your first year activities. Also this is not for someone who might already be in IAM for few years, it’s to help someone who’s making a pivot into IAM. NOTE: this video focuses on analyst and engineer entry roles. If you are targeting an IAM architect, product owner, or business analyst role, the day to day activities look quite different. Drop a comment on the video or here if your experience or expectations are different. Would love to hear what others have seen in their first year.
Excited to be Here
Hi Everyone.. My name is Mamadou Kane, currently working as a Financial Crime Specialist
Happy to be here! 👋
Thanks, Srinath, for the invite to join. Hello everyone, I am Debjit! Quick intro: a few years in identity & access support (SSO, MFA, SAML, OIDC, OAuth), now building toward an IAM analyst/identity operations role, created a few Entra ID labs. For those already working in IAM, two things I'd love your take on: a) How did you make the jump from a support role to actually administering, engineering, and owning the platform in production? b) What was the one thing that got you from “almost hired” to hired?

My biggest fear of perusing my dream of becoming an IAM engineer is my age. I'm 63 years old and I've been in IT for over 2 decades now. All the way from desktop/technical support to Cisco voice engineer. My Cisco voice contract ended in 2020 during the pandemic. In 2022, I joined a Cybersecurity internship. I realized I still have that passion to work in IT. After some research, I came across IAM. And I knew right away that IAM is my destination path. Therefore at this age, I feel that I can work as an IAM engineer and not be over whammed.
