I created a website and Instagram account, Sexy Disabled Folks, in 2022 as part of my Masters of Social Work thesis project. I wanted to address a topic that I had been passionate about for years—disability and sexuality. As a woman born with Spina Bifida, this was important to me because of my own negative experiences that I knew were not a “me problem”. It was difficult to find sexual health resources and services for someone like me who has physical limitations. Fast forward to almost 2026 and my efforts to increase such awareness and build a community of people with similar experiences has grown significantly. That being said, it is my dream to create a nonprofit organization.

Hello Sexy Disabled Folks and Allies! I’d love to introduce myself. My name is Amar Sharif and I’m a 30-something year old woman living with Spina Bifida as well as anxiety and depression. I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user. I’m a licensed social worker in New York and the Founder of Sexy Disabled Folks established in 2022. I was Ms. Wheelchair New York 2024. All of these descriptions I give myself are something I’m super proud of. As it does for most of us in the disability community, whether your disability is congenital or acquire, it’s taken A LOT of work to get to this point. Every single day that I come on here, it’s a chance to meet and reconnect with such wonderful people, and I’m eternally grateful for that. While I don’t consider myself to be an inspiration, I hope that I’ve been able to make a positive impact and provide reminders that we’re all in this together.
