I often see people look at a competitor’s backlink count and think they need to build the same number. But total backlinks do not tell the full story. A competitor may have 1,500 guest post backlinks, but many of them could be weak, irrelevant, duplicated, or spammy. Instead of copying the number blindly, I first check the real link gap. Here is what I compare: → Dofollow referring domains, not just total backlinks → Link quality and niche relevance → DR ranges of the linking websites → Links pointing to the exact ranking page → Anchor text distribution → Link velocity over the last 3 to 6 months In one of my recent link reports, I grouped competitor backlinks into different DR buckets and manually checked their relevance. This helped me calculate how many quality links were actually needed to close the authority gap. Sometimes 100 strong and relevant backlinks, combined with solid on-page SEO, can outperform 1,500 weak guest posts. When I build links, I normally follow these vetting requirements: → Ahrefs DR 30+ → At least 1,000 organic traffic → 50%+ traffic from English-speaking countries → At least 6 months of traffic history → No 70%+ traffic drop in the last 6 months → The site ranks for real keywords → No major spikes or drops in DR → No paid links to casino, gambling, porn, or Viagra websites → No mention of openly selling links → The site must be niche-relevant, not a general website publishing about everything The goal is not to build the most links. The goal is to build the right links. What do you check before accepting a backlink?
