The RUDI Rundown · July 13 — The AI labs turn on each other
July 13 so far — first edition AI labs turned on each other. Apple dragged OpenAI to court, accusing it of orchestrating the theft of confidential hardware secrets through two former Apple employees — the suit broke in a Forbes report late Sunday and is now multiply covered. Same window, one report says Anthropic revoked OpenAI's API access to Claude after finding it used for internal development. The model race was a talent war; it's now a litigation and access war. Synthetic media had a terrible trust day. One statistics roundup claims a 3,892% surge in document deepfakes with $893M in US fraud losses; a test found Meta's own AI-image detector misses 55% of its images once cropped; Meta pulled its Instagram-photos AI feature after three days of backlash; and the UK's Crown Prosecution Service admitted submitting AI-fabricated legal authorities to the High Court. Plus a documented first: an AI agent running a ransomware attack end-to-end against an AI app builder. The EU AI Act's August 2 enforcement date is three weeks out. India's Supreme Court is drafting rules welcoming AI assistance in courts while banning it from judicial decisions. US Senate proposals on military AI got a serious walkthrough. And Microsoft set July 24 for GPT-5.6 to become standard across 365 Copilot. Wildcards worth knowing: Hollywood is arguing over whether AI character Tilly Norwood's feature-film debut makes her an "actor," and Agent Harness ECC — a free config tool that turns Claude Code into a full dev team — passed 228,000 GitHub stars, a quiet signal that configuration expertise is rivaling model access as the scarce skill. The fight over AI moved from benchmarks to courtrooms and API keys — on the same day the tools for detecting AI's output kept failing in public. OpenAI 5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna: Which Model Should You Use?
Choosing the right AI model matters. Luna is for cleanup and extraction. Terra is for everyday writing, SOPs, meeting prep, and normal analysis. Sol is for deep reasoning, code architecture, research synthesis, and long-context work. Save this before your next prompt.
