What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and why does it matter?
Morning! I just wanted to talk to you a bit about AEO. I am sure you have all heard of SEO, but possibly not the term AEO. Answer Engine Optimisation is the process of structuring your content so that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and Gemini can understand, summarise, and present it as a direct answer to user queries. These systems do not simply rank websites. They extract and generate content based on what they determine to be the most relevant and reliable source. Your content needs to be readable by machines as well as people. AEO focuses on: - Using a clear structure with headings, bullet points, and summaries - Answering specific questions early in the content - Adding schema markup to help AI interpret the page - Prioritising accuracy, authority, and trust signals This is important because users increasingly receive answers directly from AI tools without visiting websites. If your content is not optimised for these engines, it may be overlooked entirely. AEO helps ensure your content is selected and cited by AI rather than left behind. Across my clients, I am seeing more traffic and conversions from the likes of ChatGPT and other platforms.
