I had one of those jobs recently where the customer said “yes” to my price way too fast… and you know that feeling where your stomach drops and you think:
“Damn… I definitely underpriced this one.”
We showed up and the job was way more than it looked on the surface.
Heavier items.
More trips.
More labor hours.
Dump fees higher than expected.
Stuff tucked behind stuff the customer “forgot” to mention.
Halfway through, I already knew the number was wrong.
By the time we finished, it was clear I should’ve charged at least double.
That one stung, but it forced me to slow down during quotes instead of firing numbers off to “win the job.”
Now I take the extra minute to:
- walk the full site
- ask what’s actually leaving
- check access and stairs
- estimate labor time
- mention dump fees
- set the right expectations
And honestly… it’s made a massive difference.
People understand the price better, and I don’t walk away feeling like I worked for free.
Curious if anyone else has had that “yep… I underpriced this one” job lately.
