Money Story Confession
Roughly 10 years ago I made a decision to partner with someone I was dating to run my business. I did not put all the right paperwork in place. I thought I was pretty smart and thought everything through. I never consulted a lawyer. I relied on my limited knowledge and negotiated a contract with terms etc. and thought that there was enough agreement to make it work. It wasn't a bad plan but because I did not get legal advice from experts who know how best to put these things together I never fully understood my exposure. Needless to say, it was a big financial mistake. I never explored the ramifications of someone doing business under my name with no personal liability. Everything was still in my name - I thought this would ensure nothing was done without my knowing - Big mistake. Every mistake made was mine to solve. Eventually after the problems started to pile up, I sought legal advice. Way late in the game. I had to close the business, and it's taken years to resolve all the financial headaches that came with that process. Lesson learned - I now fully understand the value of legal advice. I would never move forward with agreeing to any partnership without it. This applies to relationships as well. Whether it is family or friends. Once you sign, you are on the hook. What is one money mistake you have made that you learned from? Let's all learn from each other!
