What support do you need this year?
I’m about to finalise the training programme for this community - this is your last chance to share your input. Tell me what aspects of academic publishing and building your expert profile would you like to develop.
Happy weekend!
We’re all here to learn and develop our skills. But remember it’s equally important to rest. What are you up to this weekend? P.S. we have taken our crazy cocker spaniel for training today - she loved it!
Happy weekend!
Feel like you should have been cited...
I just saw an article that was just published. It was very close to an article we published over 10 years ago, in my opinion, yet we were not cited. There are so many papers out there, some can be missed. I can understand that. What would you do? For the science of it all, I feel like I should at least reach out to the authors and let them know so that any future research they do in that area can be thought of in full context of our findings too. Or maybe a LinkedIn post, gives more visibility to our prior work in the context of theirs. A letter to the editor is probably not right, since the study itself/methods, etc. was solid. As an academic, seeing a study missed that was so close/related just feels like the reader of the newer paper is missing out too. And for science to progress quicker, it would be better to know what had been done before. Or do nothing at all. So many other things to do anyway. Just curious to know the community thoughts. Thank you.
Internet now-a-days 2026
In the past, a person’s skill (like writing, teaching, or crafting) was the primary value. Today: Algorithmic Arbitration: Programmers write the code that decides who gets seen on Etsy, YouTube, or Uber. The "Take" Rate: Platforms often take a percentage of every dollar earned, essentially taxing the individual's time and effort. Data Extraction: Even when you aren't "working," your digital presence is being packaged and sold by the systems programmers built. Programmer's have monopolized all ways for the individuals to make and earn money online. The individual's work and time have become commodities and the value of thier work has been transfered to the specialized skills of the Programmer's.
What AI tools do you use and why?
As above, always curious to learn what people are using these days. My AI stack is as follows: - Perplexity for research (pro version, can get educational discount!) - ResearchRabbit for paper discovery - Gemini Nano Banana for graphs - Grammarly for grammar & language I tend not to use AI for writing stuff. I just feel more connected to my work by writing myself and I learn more by processing ideas myself. What about you?
