Federal Partnership to Expand Prehospital Whole Blood Transfusion Programs

The Uniformed Services University and NHTSA’s Office of Emergency Medical Services announced a federally backed initiative to establish at least 25 new prehospital blood transfusion programs across the U.S. over the next three years. Early blood transfusion in the field is associated with significantly improved survival in trauma patients with severe hemorrhage, making this a clinically significant advancement in trauma care protocols. Whole blood transfusion as an emerging capability that may shift prehospital resuscitation practices and require updated training, quality assurance, and protocol oversight. EMS1
