What is a petechial rash?
- Petechiae are flat, non-blanching, pinpoint spots (1–2 mm) caused by capillary bleeding under the skin.
- Because the blood is beneath the skin surface, petechiae cannot be felt and do not protrude.
If it is raised
A raised purplish lesion is not petechiae — it is more consistent with:
- Purpura (larger, >2 mm but <1 cm)
- Palpable purpura → especially seen in vasculitis
- Urticaria (hives) with hemorrhagic component
