Quote 1: “Sometimes we get sad about things and we don't like to tell other people that we are sad about them. We like to keep it a secret. Or sometimes, we are sad but we really don't know why we are sad, so we say we aren't sad but we really are.” - Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Quote 2: “My past is not a memory. It's a force at my back. It pushes and steers. I may not always like where it leads me, but like any story, the past needs resolution. What's past is prologue.” - Samus Aran, Metroid: Other M
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was written by Mark Haddon and published on May 1st, 2003. The mystery novel’s title came from a 1892 Sherlock Holmes short story "The Adventure of Silver Blaze". The book follows Christopher John Francis Boone who is a special 15 year old kid that knows all the countries of the world, their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Christopher also understands the emotions of animals, but he doesn’t understand the emotions of people. Christopher also hates being touched and the color yellow. All of this creates an interesting backdrop for Christopher’s curious investigation when a neighborhood dog dies in the nighttime. The book’s format is also incredibly unique as the chapters are counted in prime numbers.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’s quote explains how our memories shape our reaction to events. Christopher doesn’t know how to handle his emotions properly and, in turn, he can’t properly display his emotions of joy or sadness. Nevertheless, Christopher goes through some rough realizations over the course of the book about himself and those around him. The quote also explains that sometimes we mask our emotions because we don’t want to reveal them in order to keep it a secret. Other times, we don’t understand our emotions, so we don’t express them. Your emotions and memories have purpose, don’t repress them.
Metroid: Other M is a 3D shooter video game released on August 31, 2010, on the Wii. The game is the third to last one in the chronological timeline following Super Metroid and preceding Metroid Fusion. This game is also unique as this is the first game where protagonist Samus Aran had a voice actor for dialogue. The game follows Samus as she reminisces on her past missions in the Galactic Federation training facility where she trains for her next mission. Samus receives a distress signal called “Baby’s Cry” on a decommissioned Bottle Ship. She meets up with another galactic federation platoon and their leader Adam who she works with throughout the rest of the game.
Metroid: Other M’s quote explains how Samus–despite her dark past that would have pushed most to repress inwards–uses her memories as an augmentation of herself to make her the successful individual she is. Samus uses her past to push her forward and advance herself regardless of what the outcome may be. To Samus, her past is just the prologue to the present and future journeys that she embarks on in her galactic adventures. Use your past to push yourself to improvement and advancements.
