Quotes of the Day 51: View
Quote 1: “One’s destination is never a place, but rather a new way of looking at things.” - Henry Miller
Quote 2: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
Henry Miller was born on December 26th, 1891 and died on June 7th, 1980. Miller is a Bohemian (nonconformist) U.S. writer who wrote autobiographical novels which had a liberating effect due to the bluntness on his topics like sex. Miller wrote in a very free style that had comedic aspects with his bluntness in exposing personal feelings. However, that bluntness caused his books to be banned in the U.S. and U.K. until the 1960s. Instead, much of Miller’s literature fame came from France. Miller started writing in the 1930s with a collection of childhood stories called “Black Spring” based upon his life in Brooklyn, New York. In 1930, Miller went to France and published “Tropic of Cancer” in 1934 and “Tropic of Capricorn” in 1939. Miller wrote more based on Greece, a tour of the U.S., and California. When Miller published the “Tropics” in the U.S. a Supreme Court decision in 1964 rejected the claim that the book was obscene.
Miller explains that the destination is not a physical place. The destination is a new way of seeing life and understanding it. Miller’s destination is a more mental and philosophical place in which we learn new perspectives to understand ourselves and the world around us which we never thought possible before. Miller dealt with such issues as his books would be the destinations to deliver a new perspective to the world, but the journey of being banned for up to 25 years before receiving a worldwide publication restricted him.
The Little Prince was written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and published on April 6, 1943. The book is a novella published in the wake of the liberation of France during WWII which was written and illustrated by Saint-Exupéry who was a military pilot. The book opens with the narrator showing adults a picture of a boa constrictor eating an elephant which most adults interpret as a hat. The book follows the narrator (now a pilot) who is stranded in the Sahara Desert and wakes up to find a small individual in front of him who he names “Le Petit Prince” (French for The Little Prince). The Little Prince asks for a picture of a sheep to be drawn, and the prince correctly interprets the elephant and the snake drawing. The narrator draws the sheep inside a crate after failing to draw the sheep. The prince is glad that the pilot drew exactly what he wanted. The book continues onwards in a mystical way to teach the secrets of life’s most important moments in ways that are universally admired by children and adults.
The Little Prince’s quote explains how the best way that we can see the world around us is to see the world through the heart. If we don’t view the world with our heart, we are prone to missing some of the most important things around us. The Little Prince and the pilot both have experienced people wasting their lives away living their lives without love and creativity. However, they work together to see their lives with their heart to see their world in the best light.
I hope these quotes improved your view of the world. Have a great day everyone!
