Quotes of the Day 50: Continuation
Quote 1: “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about: life goes on.” - Robert Frost
Quote 2: “The ongoing WOW is happening, right now!” - Speed Levitch, Waking Life
Robert Frost was born on March 26th, 1874 and died on January 29th, 1963. Robert Frost is a poet who was admired for his work depicting the rural life of New England, colloquial speech, and depictions of the ordinary in their everyday lives. Robert’s father William Prescott Frost, Jr was a journalist who moved to California in 1873 and died of tuberculosis in 1885. Robert’s mother then decided to take her children to Massachusetts where she taught in New Hampshire and Massachusetts schools while Robert and his sister Jeannie were taken care of by their grandparents. Robert graduated as high school valedictorian in 1892 with his future wife Elinor White, that year’s second valedictorian. Frost published his first professional poem, “My Butterfly: An Elegy,” in 1894. The family faced tough times as Frost taught poetry and tried farming to provide for them. Once the Derry farm which Frost worked on was passed down to him, he sold it and moved his family to England where poetry was far more respected. By publishing “A Boy’s Will” and “North of Boston”, Frost finally gained the recognition he deserved.
Frost’s quote is straightforward and to the point. Life goes on. Whether you succeed or fail, win or lose, rain or sun, day or night, try or give up, life will continue onwards. Frost didn’t succeed for 40 years of his life until his poetry career finally took off. If it was for his tenacity and continuation of his passion, we wouldn’t have all of his beautiful poems today. Keep moving forward because the stars will still shine in the night sky as the sun does in the day as the Earth spins itself around our little ball of rock in space.
Waking Life is an animated movie released on October 19th, 2001 which questions the philosophical concepts of reality, dreams, consciousness, the meaning of life, free will, and existentialism. The Walking Life follows the dreams of a man who is trying to find the differences between his reality and the dream world. He tries to walk up and in the process meets many different individuals who offer advice on life, its mysteries and its questions. The “protagonist” is no longer a character as we ourselves enter into this blank slate of a character and ask ourselves the important questions that will have not yet gained an answer. The movie features out of this world animation that can only be described as abstract and dreamlike. The movie utilizes rotoscope techniques to create the unique effect. The movie underperformed at the box office despite receiving critical acclaim. Honestly, if you have a chance to watch it or just check out a short clip, do so as I don’t think you will regret it.
Timothy “Speed” Levitch plays himself in this movie. Levitch’s quote explains that while we may not recognize, there is always so much happening around us and so much of the awe that we would like to experience in the world is happening now. Our world is a crazy place, but in that absurdness, there is a beauty in the chaos. We must remember when the world seems dark and empty that there is always going to be something beautiful and amazing happening somewhere at that very same moment and that the feelings of that moment will continue onwards.
I hope that today’s quotes inspired you to continue whatever it is that your passion is. Have a great day everyone!
