Quote 1: “You have to get through your fear to understand the beauty on the other side.” - Poppa Henry, The Good Dinosaur
Quote 2: “When the sun is shining I can do anything; no mountain is too high, no trouble is difficult to overcome.” - Wilma Rudolph
The Good Dinosaur is an animated adventure film made by Pixar studios and first released on November 10, 2015. The movie is a hypothetical realization of a world where the asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs never hit Earth. In this version of Earth, the giant dinosaurs which once roamed the land still live to do so. The movie follows the journey of an apatosaurus by the name of Arlo who meets a human by the name of Spot when Arlo is washed downstream. Arlo and Spot become friends despite the odd circumstances and their differences. The two protagonists journey through the prehistoric asteroid-less dinosaur world as Arlo learns to confront his fears and discover his true capabilities. The movie isn’t too complicated (which people have criticized the movie for not being up to Pixar’s story telling standards) but did have a very significant impact on Pixar’s animations. 2015 marked the first year where Pixar released two movies in the same year with “Inside Out” releasing earlier in 2015. The Good Dinosaur also marked Pixar’s first box office failure as it lost the company $85 million as it grossed $332.2 million on a $175 - 200 million budget.
Poppa Henry is Arlo’s father within the movie. He explains that you have to overcome your fears in order to find true beauty. Arlo faces his fear on his journey with Spot and because of that he finds the beauty that comes with overcoming your fear. While it isn't easy to overcome fear or any obstacles for that matter, the quote remains true as the reward for overcoming that which stands in your way is one of the greatest rewards of all for the accomplishment. Arlo may have started scared, but the friendships and growth that he went through over the course of the movie is a beauty that can never be replicated or remade.
Wilma Rudolph was born on June 23rd, 1940, and died on November 12th, 1994. Rudolph was an American sprinter and the first American woman to win three track-and-field gold medals in a single Olympics. Rudolph was unable to walk without orthopedic shoes until age 11, but due to her determination she championed sports at her high school at Clarksville, Tennessee in basketball and sprinting. During her education at Tennessee State University from 1957 to 1961, Rudolph competed at the 1956 Olympic Games at Melbourne, Australia at age 16 and won the bronze medal for the 4 × 100-meter relay race and the 1960 Olympic Games at Rome, Italy where she set a world record of 22.9 seconds for the 200-meter race and won gold medals in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and as a member of the 4 x 100-meter relay team. Rudolph was the Amateur Athletic Union 100-yard-dash champion from 1959 to 1962. After retiring as a runner, Rudolph became the assistant director for an assistant director for a girls’ track-and-field youth foundation in Chicago during the 1960s where she promoted running nationally. Rudolph joined legends in the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1974 and the International Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983.
Rudolph’s quote explains that so long as we have the chance and opportunity to overcome any obstacles in our path we can. Rudolph performed incredible feats early in her life with Olympic competition victories at age 16 and 20 respectively. However, to me, the most interesting feat she overcame was that of physical health issues which prevented her from gaining sports experience earlier in her life. Despite the limitations set upon her, Rudolph overcame them and performed excellently in high school, university and beyond until she literally reached the Halls of Fame.
I hope that today’s quote ensured that you overcome whatever obstacles may stand before you. Have a great day everyone!
