These small knobs and dials may look simple, yet they hide a production secret few ever master. In this lesson you’ll learn how precision, repetition, and grain awareness turn scraps into refined, tactile components that elevate any mechanism. This is where efficiency meets elegance—where batches are born, tolerances matter, and every spin of the dial carries intention, balance, and craft forward.

This Part Production module returns you to the bench, not the screen. You’ll learn to forge precision components entirely by hand—developing the quiet skills of layout, rhythm, and controlled removal. Each gear is shaped through feel, repetition, and attention, revealing how accuracy emerges from embodied practice. This is not about speed or software, but about training the hands to think and the eye to trust what it sees.

In this Level 1 course we will take a wooden liquor box and turn it into a working puzzle box. I happen to use up some old yardstick I had laying around, but you can feel free to use a stock material. The locking mechanism is a vintage one out of Japan, called the Black Document Box. We tweak the design a little add in some Red Herrings. To keep it simple, the knobs found on the side are found in a craft store. Once complete, the interior is fairly empty so you can put fun items inside.

In this Level 1 Puzzle Mechanics course, you will build a simple, effective puzzle box designed to clarify how fundamental mechanisms work. The focus is on understanding movement, resistance, and release through hands-on construction. While the application is intentionally straightforward, the mechanism itself forms a foundation that can be combined with other locking systems as designs grow more complex.

This course initiates you into a puzzle box guided by a controlled pendulum, where gravity becomes teacher and timing becomes truth. The mechanism does not respond to force, only to understanding. As you build, you’ll learn how motion, restraint, and patience align to reveal hidden access. This is not a lock to defeat, but a magnetic system to listen to.

In this module, I transform a vintage Cohiba cigar box into a playful yet deceptive design called Penny Drop. What appears to be a simple game and functional piggy bank becomes something more through a secretly locking slide lid. This piece demonstrates how a basic sliding top can evolve into an engaging mechanical surprise—blending nostalgia, misdirection, and clever design into one compact creation.

This module explores a simple but sneaky toggle lock system. Each dial can rest either left or right, and somewhere within those choices lies the key to alignment. When the correct pattern is found, the inner gates fall into place and the lid opens. It’s a reminder that discovery often lives in small movements — and that a curious mind, willing to test and observe, will always find the path.

This module reveals the Sweet Spot Mechanism. At first the dial seems ordinary, turning like any other control. But when it reaches the exact position, something unexpected happens — the shaft pulls outward, revealing a hidden space to explore. In that precise moment, a single tooth aligns perfectly with the spring lid lock and the mechanism releases. A small detail, a perfect alignment, and suddenly a simple dial becomes a secret waiting to be discovered.

This advanced Pendulum Lock module deepens your mechanical fluency through layered motion and restraint. You’ll work with additional dials that act as internal manipulators, exploring limit stops as both boundary and creative tool. Geo-positioning is introduced to teach how orientation itself becomes part of the lock. This is a study in precision, patience, and hidden control—where subtle adjustments unlock entirely new possibilities.

This module explores a mechanical combination locking system built from layered wooden components. Students will discover how complex security mechanisms are simply interconnected on/off switches, each with its own precise setting. By observing how parts interact, learners develop the ability to see systems within systems—how alignment creates access and misalignment prevents it. This build strengthens spatial awareness, mechanical reasoning, and systems thinking through hands-on puzzle design.

At first glance, every push-button in this system appears identical—same motion, same travel, same feel. Yet beneath that uniform action lies the true challenge: designing a system where some buttons allow progress while others prevent it. In this module, we explore how precision, tight tolerances, and thoughtful layout transform simple movement into selective behavior, and how starting positions—buttons in or out—become the very language of the combination itself.

A single mechanism teaches function. Multiple mechanisms teach wisdom. In this module, we introduce a new element designed to block the push-button system until it is solved first. Here we begin learning how mechanisms work in concert—layering logic, building dependency, and discovering how complexity grows from simple beginnings.

This Level 5 course begins with a shared foundation: one puzzle box design, one mechanical truth. From there, the box becomes a teacher. Wood, movement, and structure reveal how intention shapes outcome, how patience opens doors, and how creation responds to presence. You are not only learning how to make a puzzle box—you are learning how reality itself assembles when attention, belief, and action align. If you are unable to find a used cigar box, you are invited to make one.

Level 5 is a collective achievement. Each maker designs a unique hexagon puzzle that follows a shared interface, allowing every piece to lock with another. Individual creativity becomes part of a larger structure as the community assembles a single, ever-growing puzzle. What emerges is not just size, but a visible record of collaboration, craftsmanship, and collective intent. Ultimately, our goal is to create something to submit to Guinness World Record More to follow as this Module is created.

Puzzle Joust is a playful rite of exchange. Participants pair up and each build two copies of the same puzzle box, though naturally different for each person. The copies are traded, inviting your classmate to add a clever lock, or build around it somehow that must be solved before the original opens. The format ensures each maker keeps one of each design. What emerges is part game, part ritual—where dialogue, mischief, and craft shape puzzles no one could build alone.
