Why We Self-Sabotage (It's Probably Not What You Think)
If you've ever found yourself saying... "Why do I keep doing this?" "I know what I should do...so why don't I do it?" "Why do I keep getting in my own way?" You're not alone. And the answer isn't that you're lazy.
It's not because you're unmotivated. And it's certainly not because God forgot about you. More often than not, we don't sabotage our future; we protect an identity we've unconsciously accepted.
Your Brain Protects What It Believes
Your mind is constantly looking for evidence that supports what you already believe about yourself. If, somewhere along the way, you began believing...
❌ I'm not qualified.
❌ Success is for other people.
  • ❌ I always quit.
  • ❌ I'm not good with money.
  • ❌ People won't take me seriously.
...your mind will quietly look for evidence that confirms those beliefs. Not because they're true.
Because they're familiar. Familiar feels safe; even when it keeps us stuck. That's why information alone rarely changes behavior. You can read another book, buy another course, or watch another YouTube video, but until your identity begins to change, your behaviors usually return to what's familiar.
Here's the Good News
The Bible has been teaching this principle long before modern psychology began studying it. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (Romans 12:2). Notice Paul didn't say: "Try harder."
He said: Be transformed. Transformation begins internally before it becomes visible externally.
PurposeFlow™ Believes...
We don't manifest a new reality by controlling the universe. We participate in God's work by renewing our minds, aligning our hearts with His truth, and faithfully stewarding the opportunities He places before us. Faith is not pretending something is true. Faith is agreeing with what God says is true—even before we fully experience it. That's a very different posture. One is control. The other is trust.
So How Do We Replace Limiting Beliefs?
Here are a few practices I encourage my coaching clients to use:
1️⃣ Identify the Story You're Repeating. Ask yourself: What do I consistently believe about myself? Where did that belief come from? Is this God's truth—or someone else's opinion? Awareness is the first step toward freedom.
2️⃣ Replace Lies with Truth. Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" Ask: What does God say about me? What truth have I forgotten? Who am I becoming in this season? Your identity should be built on truth—not past experiences.
3️⃣ Practice Small Acts of Obedience. Identity isn't changed by wishing. It's strengthened through faithful action. Every small step says: "This is who I'm becoming." That's why PurposeFlow™ teaches:
Action activates identity. Not frantic hustle. Faithful movement.
4️⃣Protect What You Feed Your Mind. Your mind is being discipled something. You can choose what that something is. Will it be social media, fear, comparison, and past pain? Or will it be the Word, faith, identity, and previous accomplishments. Choose wisely.
5️⃣ Celebrate Evidence of Growth. Most people only notice what they haven't done. PurposeFlow™ trains you to notice what God is already doing. Celebrate: The courageous conversation, post you finally published, client you served well, boundary you honored, fear you moved through, and small wins build confidence. Confidence builds consistency. Consistency creates momentum.
Remember This...
You don't have to become someone else. You don't have to perform your way into purpose. You don't have to earn your calling. You simply need to continue renewing your mind, taking the next faithful step, and trusting God with the outcome. That's how lasting transformation happens. Clarity creates focus.
Focus creates consistency. Consistency produces clients.
Reflection Question:
What's one belief you've been carrying that no longer aligns with who God is calling you to become? Post it in a comment below, add a GIF and then scroll up to other comments and ask a question. Asking open ended questions help to expand our minds because it allows us to reflect on possibilities. It also deepens our engagement with one another.
