We've all seen it, riots, protests, mass demonstrations and interference with Law Enforcement. Whether you agree or disagree, there are some key takeaways for the everyday man and woman looking to stay safe. Step One is the easiest. -Don't. Get. Involved. Simple, easy to remember, and useful in a pinch. If you know there's a protest scheduled in your area, stay vigilant and keep your distance. When people are angry, things get heated, when things are heated, they become dynamic. All of this in turn can become kinetic in a heartbeat, now we have cars on fire, broken windows, and you just trying to make a grocery run caught in the middle. But let's game it out, let's say you do make that Walmart run, and smack into (not literally) a crowd of angry individuals that seem insistent on property damage, what's our COA (Course Of Action?) Keeping Step One firmly in the forefront of your mind, we want to egress, boogie, or otherwise remove ourselves from the situation utilizing our vehicle, backing up, sidewalks, running red lights, be smart, but be deliberate in your action. Get out of the way and let them work out their anger on someone that isn't you and/or (God, Yahweh, the Universe forbid,) your family. Step Two: Houston We Have A Problem. So staying away didn't work, reversing out of the eye of the hurricane is a long gone option, and that bumper sticker you thought was cute is now drawing the ire of some rangey folks. This is the nightmare scenario and one that I hope you never find yourself on the middle of. But we're here now, so let's be here and work the problem, you have your kiddos on the backseat, there are legion malign actors outside your vehicle, and those windows won't hold. This is where things get complex, legality wise. In some jurisdictions, the onus is one the State to prove that you were wrong, not the other way around, and a crowd of people, even unarmed, pose a deadly threat via sheer volume. However, you're in the mix, and luxurious thoughts like "Should we?" and "What could be the implications of doing X" need to go right out that busted rear window.
