Lifting after 40+
A few years ago I watched something in the gym that stuck with me. Two men came in the same week. One was 44. Successful. Busy. Slight belly. Said the classic line: “I used to be in great shape.” The other guy was 63. Same story at first glance. Busy career behind him. A few injuries. Hadn’t trained seriously in years. But their attitudes were completely different. The 44-year-old kept explaining why things were harder now. “Metabolism is slower.” “Recovery is worse.” “Age catches up.” The 63-year-old said something else. “I want to see how strong I can still become.” Fast forward 8 months. The 63-year-old is deadlifting, leaner than when he started, and his posture changed so much people ask if he had surgery. The 44-year-old still “plans to get back into it.” Here’s the lesson. Age is rarely the problem. Mindset about age is the problem. After 40 your body absolutely can get stronger, leaner and more capable. But only if you stop treating your age like a diagnosis. Strength training isn’t about chasing your 25-year-old body. It’s about building a dangerously capable 50-year-old body. And honestly? That version of you might be even better.
Full body circuit
I do something like this 2-3 times per week. Not a power, but more full body conditioning. I switch exercises and number of sets almost every time. Depends on how my body feels. Trying to keep 5-6 exercises and 3-5 sets, high reps.

Why This Exists
For years I’ve coached people inside Primal MMA and Ethereal BJJ Academies. I’ve seen the same pattern over and over. People don’t struggle because they are lazy. They struggle because they train without structure. Some train at the academy. Some train at commercial gyms. Some train alone. What they need is clarity, progression, and accountability. This community is an extension of what I/we do at Ethereal. If you are local (Toronto, East End, Canada), you can train with me in person. If you are remote, you follow the same system online. Or you can combine both. This is about building a stronger body and sharper mindset. Introduce yourself below: – Where you train – Your current goal – Your biggest obstacle Let’s get to work.

🥋 Welcome to Discipline Over Comfort! Fitness. BJJ. Mindset. Built for 35+. I created this community for people who decided to stop making excuses and start building again. This is not about chasing quick fixes or pretending life did not hit hard. It is about choosing discipline over comfort and proving to yourself that your best years are still ahead. Over the past year I rebuilt my body, cut weight, and started competing again (I never really stopped). I learned that what changes everything after 35 is not motivation. It is consistency, accountability, and being surrounded by people who want the same thing. Here is what you will find here: ✅ Training and nutrition tips that actually work for 35+ ✅ BJJ and strength discussions for longevity ✅ Mindset tools and weekly challenges ✅ Real support from people walking the same path Now it is your turn.👉 Introduce yourself in the comments: - Where are you from? - What’s your main goal right now? - What do you want to improve first: strength, weight, mindset, or all of it? Bonus fun prompt: - What’s one movie, book, or quote that gets you fired up? - Post a photo of your training space, home gym, or the mat you roll on. - Choose one: 🦁 Lion (focused/hungry) • 🐺 Wolf (disciplined/steady) • 🐢 Turtle (slow and steady) — tell us which mindset you’re in this week and why Welcome to the community.
