How to Sprout For Your Flock
Save Money On Your Feed Costs Click here for a step-by-step guide to sprouting your own barley (or other seed) for your flock. In this video, we use a small-scale example to explain a process that can be scaled to larger operations. At Blooming Health Farms, we advocate sprouting versus microfodder because the yields are much higher with the amount of labor involved. Of course, the jar we use is not big enough if you have hundreds or thousands of birds. Therefore, we recommend growing sprouts with one of our larger engineered systems.
Saving Money
Here's an idea for you. Find somebody who does wood work and ask them for their wood shavings. I used to know a guy who made bowls and would have huge bags, like the paper bags used to collect leaves, of shavings that he was more than happy to give me. He said it felt better to know they were being used and not sitting in a landfill. I just posted a note on Nextdoor and ask if anybody had wood shavings they wanted to get rid of. It was a win win! 😄
Chicken Diapers
If you want to bring your chickens to a place where chicken poo isn't a good idea try putting a disposable face mask on them. They work great! I got children's face masks for my bantam (miniature) rooster. He was cute running around with that thing on and no poo in the house!
Sprouting
If anybody wants to try sprouting on a larger scale with buckets I have a suggestion on where to get some good buckets. Go to the bakery department of any grocery store and ask for buckets. Their icing usually comes in 3 1/2 gallon food grade buckets. I just do a quick wash to remove any icing left in the bucket and it's ready to go!
