Testing and killing ads?

Hi so I've always used dynamic creative which lets you have max 10 creatives (photos + videos). I didn't even really have different ad sets until recently.

I've now transitioned to the generic set up. Just wondering how do you test and kill bad ads?

E.g.

Ad set 1

10 ads

Ad set 2

10 ads

Ad set 3

10 ads

Lets say Ad set 1 performs very well but Ad set 2 and Ad set 3 don't perform at all. Would you just pause the other 2 ad sets and duplicate Ad set 1?

Or is it better to find the winning ad in Ad set 1 - then duplicate that and pause the other ads? Then relaunch a new ad set? Or what is the general process?
