Why do you do the business you do?
I have been told many times by people close to me, “Why do you do this? Why choose accounting? Why focus on taxes? Why not start a YouTube channel about something else?”
Those who know me personally know how much I appreciate good manners, etiquette, and acting like a lady. I even teach this, in subtler ways, to young women I meet in other clubs I’m part of. I wouldn’t say I like it, it’s just something I grew up doing. I spent multiple summers in an academy as a child, so it became second nature because my mom was strict.
People have asked me, “Why not do that?” And yes, it would mean less research, less continuing education, less of a lot of things. It might even be considered a “simpler” path. But I’ve found that helping the people around me pay less in taxes is just as rewarding.
I enjoy this work because it keeps me sharp. It keeps me connected to investments, to what my clients are building, and to the bigger picture of money. Honestly, I do it partly for myself, I like being informed, knowledgeable, and savvy about my taxes and investments.
A long time ago, I realized that everything eventually gets taxed, unless you defer it, but even then, it all eventually gets taxed unless you learn to use the tax code in your favor.
So that’s my story… why are you in the business you’re in?
